Description 80-G-49898: Battle for Iwo Jima, February-March 1945. This picture, taken at Iwo Jima, show some of the work done by USS Sumner (AGS-5) under direction of the Navy’s Hydrographic Office. Survey signals erected by the crew of Sumner stands by the flag that made Mount Suribachi famous. There were still many Japanese snipers both on and in the volcano when this signal was erected. Photograph received July 12, 1945. U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2016/02/23).
