80-G-55648: Survivors of USS Rowan (DD 405) torpedoed by an E-boat while protecting a convoy of transports at Salerno, Italy. USS Bristol (DD 453) was the rescue ship. Left to right: Ensign M.L. Haines; Lieutenant Junior Grade L.F. Brown; and Chief Boatswain’s Mate W.H. Wohnus are responsible for saving many lives. They helped round up survivors in the water, got many Wounded men to rafts. USS Rowan (DD 405) was torpedoed by an E-Boat while protecting a convoy of transports at Salerno, Italy. USS Bristol (DD 453) rescued the ship. Photographed by CPU-5, September 14, 1943.
