Description

Looking NNE from 27th St. at McAlpine Locks. Swing span over heads of 600-foot and 360-foot locks is in position to allow vessels to enter or depart locks. Operator's house is above roadway at center of bridge. Electrical power is drawn from wires attached to pivoting crossarm on top of bridge. Note remnants of railroad tracks in foreground. When this bridge was built in 1926 (replacing an earlier, lighter bridge), it had railroad tracks as well as a road surface. Tracks were built to facilitate transportation of construction equipment to site of Dam 41 (replacing an earlier dam) and LG&E hydroelectric plant, both of which were completed in 1927. This bridge was replaced by Portland-Shippingport Bridge (a high fixed bridge completed about 2006) during construction of second 1200-foot lock. Ohio River mile 607. Louisville, Kentucky. Oct. 1987.
