English: Jimmy A. Sanders marks a tally for his 15th ascent of the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point fire department training facility Sept. 9, 2014. For the second consecutive year, the department climbed 110 flights of stairs to commemorate the 343 firefighters who gave their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. The firefighters climbed each step of the training facility 31 times in full firefighter gear listening to recorded transmissions of emergency services radio traffic from 9/11. Sanders is an assistant fire chief with Cherry Point Security and Emergency Services. He was 28 years old during the attack and was working at Cherry Point. “I was working at the air station when dispatch called for everyone to return to the station,” said Sanders, a native of Havelock, N.C. “Everyone was crowded around the television in our chief’s office when the second airplane crashed into the tower. I remember my chief at the time walked into the office and said one word – ‘terrorism.’ I knew from that moment everything was going to change.” |
