Description

A yakshi at Hindu temple in Hampi

Yaksha (Sanskrit: यक्ष yakṣa) is the name of a broad class of nature-spirits, usually benevolent, who are caretakers of the treasures created by the benevolence of nature, some open, some hidden in the earth and tree roots. They appear in Hindu, Jain and Buddhist literature. The feminine form of the word is yakṣī (यक्षी), yakshi or yakshini (yakṣiṇī, यक्षिणी).

In Hinduism, the yakṣi is a nature-fairy, that often protects the weak, nourishes the distressed, and grants favors of strength and perseverance.
