Summary edit

Description
English: A27 near Firle Looking down the main A27 as it heads west to Beddingham then Lewes. There have been tracks and roads here for many centuries; originally a minor Roman road ran across from left to right, the old medieval route from Lewes-Alfriston ran from the west then turned left into Firle. This was turnpiked in 1752 and became the coaching route between Lewes and Eastbourne. Unlike many other parts of that route, the new, improved turnpike of 1810 took over the section from Mill Lane and followed the route to the junction with Wick Street. This became the A27 and remained so until the 1960s when the road was straightened between the Firle turning and Middle Farm.
