Description |
English: Arthur A. Denny landed at Alki Beach with the Denny Party in November 1851. At first, he and his family lived in log homes. In 1865, they moved to a new house at the corner of First Avenue and Union Street. Denny's granddaughter, Sophie Frye Bass, remembered the pastures and orchards that surrounded the house, and the clear view of Elliott Bay from its front porch.
This photo shows the Denny home at First Avenue and Union Street in 1915, when the house was fifty years old. The city, with its buildings and utility poles, had started growing up around the house after the 1889 fire.
MOHAI says this is 1915 and is by Asahel Curtis. Assuming the address is correct, that is impossible. By that date, First and Union was a seriously urban area, and this was the site of the first Arcade Building. More likely, this is from the 1890s; if it's late enough in that decade, the Asahel Curtis attribution could be correct. |
