In 1655 stuurde de Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie een gezantschap naar Peking om handelsprivileges van de Chinese Keizer af te smeken. De delegatie werd vergezeld door de wereldreiziger Johan Nieuhoff die de gebeurtenissen tijdens de reis optekende. Na terugkomst in Nederland werd het rijk geïllustreerde reisverslag van Nieuhoff gepubliceerd. Bij het reisverslag hoorde ook deze kaart van het kustgebied van India en Ceylon.

In 1655 the Dutch East India Company sent a delegation to Peking to plead for trade privileges from the Chinese Emperor. The delegation was accompanied by the globetrotter Johan Nieuhoff, who kept a record of events during the journey. Nieuhoff's richly illustrated travel journal was published on his return to the Netherlands. This map of the coastal region of India and Ceylon was also part of the journal.
