Nederlands: Gezicht op de zeeslag tussen de Nederlanders en de Fransen bij Tobago in 1676.

Het zeegebied rond de verschillende eilanden in het Caraibisch gebied was tijdens de 17de en 18de eeuw berucht voor de zeerovers die daar actief waren. In 1676 stuurde Nederland een expeditie uit onder leiding van Jacob Binckes met het doel om aan deze kaapvaart een einde te maken. In 1677 kwam het bij het eiland Tobago tot een confrontatie met een Frans vlooteskader. Deze voor de Nederlanders dramatisch verlopen strijd wordt op deze historieprent van Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) uitgebeeld.

The seas around the various islands of the Caribbean was infamous for its pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1676 the Netherlands despatched an expedition led by Jacob Binckes to make an end to this privateering. In 1677 this led to a showdown with a French squadron near the island of Tobago. The battle, in which the Dutch were badly defeated, is depicted in this historic print by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708).
