Description

Apollo 17 Hasselblad image from film magazine 134/B - EVA-1 & 3.
This photo was used in Figure 4-24 of the Apollo 17 Preliminary Science Report (SP-330, 1973), which has the following caption:

A gold-colored Mylar transport bag covers the top of the lunar neutron probe (LNP) for temperature control during the 40-hr emplacement of the probe in the Moon. The LNP is designed to obtain data on neutron capture rates in the lunar regolith as a function of depth. The LNP was emplaced through the treadle assembly into the hole drilled for the core sample. The borestem and corestem rack is visible at the right margin of the photograph. The Apollo lunar surface drill power head lies on the lunar surface behind the rack. The ALSEP equipment is set up in the background. The Sculptured Hills and South Massif form the horizon.

The central portion of this photo was used in Figure 6-44 of the same report, which has the following caption:

South-looking photograph showing parallel fractures in 0.5-m-high boulder south of deep drill site. Geophone Rock is at upper left.

The photo is also used in the description of lunar sample 70001-70009, the extracted core itself. It has the following caption:

There are no photos of the crew taking the Apollo 17 deep drill core, but this photo of the site, with the neutron probe in place, shows the effort that must have been expended to obtain the three (3) meter deep drill core. AS17-134-20505. The ALSEP site is just beyond.
