Description

Although nominally allocated to the British United Air Ferries fleet at Southend, G-APNH spent parts of 1965 leased back to ATL as a demonstrator as well as operating a British Government contract to Australia carrying rocket parts. It was also leased to Straits Air Freight Express of New Zealand in October. At the very end of the year it adopted Air Ferry titles (but retained the BUA livery) and along with G-ASKG joined the Zambia Oil Airlift operation brought about by the Southern Rhodesia UDI. Both Carvairs were based at Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania and the change of title seems to have been to avoid embarrassment, as BUA continued to operate its DC-6 ‘Africargo’ service through East Africa to Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia, throughout the crisis. In June 1966 G-APNH returned to Southend and I photographed it outside the ATL Flight Shed still with Air Ferry titles and the addition of a painted giraffe head and neck and the name ‘Twiga’ (Swahili for giraffe) on the blue fuselage band.
