1513 wurde das Dorf Leiben auf Bitten des Inhabers der Herrschaft Leiben, Ulrich von Krabat von Lappitz, von Kaiser Maximilian I. zum Markt erhoben. Damit wurden die Bewohner zu „Bürgern“. Mit dem Marktprivileg war auch die Verleihung eines Jahrmarktes am St. Ulrichstag (4. Juli), eines Wochenmarktes an einem Mittwoch und eines Wappens.
