Summary

Description
English: A "nadder"/ y neidr This "nadder" was curled up in a grassy nest above the harbour to soak up what warmth the weak sun provided on a hazy September day: this has not been a good summer for snakes. European adder (Vipera berus)

The Old English word nadder was lost when 'a nadder' was mistakenly transcribed 'an adder' but in Welsh the initial letter is retained.

There is a great deal of folklore associated with these snakes, especially in Wales, see http://www.crislis.co.uk/adder/folklore.htm
