English: At the start of World War I, the borders of the Russian Empire extended west to the German and the Austro-Hungarian Empires and south to the Ottoman Empire as well as Persia. The Russian Empire at this time includes Finland, Poland, and Ukraine, giving it access to the Gulf of Bothnia, the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea.
