Description
English: Located in the St Johns neighborhood is the Amos Benson House (or Benson-Chaney House). It overlooks the Willamette River and is a neighbor to other historical landmarks in the area. Though it's next to an unnamed park, the house is a private residence. Before this, it was a school. The Benson surname is well-known in Portland. There is Benson Polytechnic High School, the Benson Bubblers (public water fountains), and the Benson Hotel. Portland State University is home to the Simon Benson House. These serve as reminders of Simon Benson, a wealthy lumber baron and civic philanthropist. He helped spearhead the creation of the Columbia River Highway. (He also allegedly haunts the Benson Hotel.) He is Amos Benson's father.
