At sculpture they make no attempt, and theirpaintings are chiefly gilded saints. The best pictures are to be seen at Scio, from the hands ofGreek artists of an age or two past. There is a composition, containing several figures, the only one I ever saw in the coun-try, in a church at Constantinople, which represents the last day.The sheep are on the right hand, and the devils are driving thegoats into the flames on the left: the sinners are drest like Jews,Turks, and, what is something odd, Archbishops and Monks. The picture is very large, and is admired as a masterpiece, but isin reality a tawdry daub. The representations of costume con-tained in this collection, are from drawings made by a Greek atConstantinople, which, as far as a painter can succeed with noother excellence thangri_000033125008542488
