Português: A Nossa Autonomia". Vasco Gonçalves Marques (1877-1949), senador da República Portuguesa nas comemorações do V Centenário da Descoberta da Madeira. Vasco Gonçalves Marques (Funchal, 29 ago. 1877; Lisboa, 10 nov. 1949). Filho do Dr. Joaquim Gonçalves e de Maria Clara de Freitas Gonçalves, frequentou o Liceu do Funchal e formou-se pela escola Médico-Cirúrgica do Funchal. Começou a sua carreira como médico municipal do Porto Moniz, adquirindo, por compra, a emblemática Farmácia Luso-Britânica, estabelecendo-se então no Funchal e filiando-se na Maçonaria. Membro do Partido Regenerador, no final da Monarquia, veio a aderir ao Partido Republicano no Centro dos Doutores, do Dr. Manuel Gregório Pestana Júnior (1886-1969). Seria a partir de então uma das figuras políticas incontornáveis da Primeira República na Madeira, começando como administrador do concelho do Funchal, em 1912, presidente da comissão executiva da Junta Geral, em 1916, só deixando de ser vogal da mesma Junta com a revolução de 28 de Maio de 1926. Foi senador pela Madeira nas eleições de 1915, 1919, 1921, 1922 e 1925, ainda sendo um dos elementos de referência da revolta da Madeira de 1931. |
