"A Wave In Time" for Napier This bronze sculpture was crafted by Mark Whyte of Lyttelton and commissioned in 2009 by the Napier City Council. The Arts Panel chose this reflection of art deco from seven excellent concepts. The statue is modelled on Miss Sheila Williams, daughter of E A Williams of the notable architects of the era. Miss Williams will be familiar to many people in Hawke's Bay - she led the "New Napier Week Carnival" in January 1933 to celebrate the town's recovery from the earthquake. Her poster is in the HB Museum and Art Gallery. The work was funded by bequests from the Kingdom Foundation and the Dobson Trust. These benefactors have been invaluable for their assistance with this important artwork. Mayor Barbara Arnott in praising the work of sculptor Mark Whyte said "This is the first public art deco sculpture that the city has had. It is wonderful that she will be part of our streetscape and enhance the city all year. The dog is securely on a lead." An unveiling ceremony was held on Friday 12 February 2010 |
