Summary edit

Description

The UK aid funded Community Support Programme (CSP) is helping rural communities in Nepal lift themselves out of poverty. In its tenth year now, the CSP is helping people living in remotes areas of Nepal to grow and sell their crops to feed their families, send their children to school and pay for healthcare.

Mother-of-three Belmati Chaudhari, farms her plot with an extended family of 15 people. She was given support buying seeds, taught what crops to grow and how to grow them and is being trained in how to irrigate her land.

“Before we were given help, we had to work on other people’s land because we could not make any money for ourselves. We have now made R70,000 in three months which is shared between all the family. We are a big family and we work together on the land.

“I have used the money to buy meat for the family, warm clothes and for education for the children. I hope they don’t have to work in the field like me and that they get jobs to support themselves and their families.

“I am very grateful for this help. Hopefully next season we will no longer need it and we can survive on our own but I still need some help to learn about markets and where is best to sell my vegetables. I hope one day to grow enough vegetables to send them to Britain so you can eat Nepali food.”
