Summary edit

Description
English: A cairn at the site of St Conal's Church. This is one of the oldest church sites in Southern Scotland with archaeological remains dating to the 9th century and the present foundations of a church dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. During the miners strike of 1926, the local parish minister used some of the idle men to investigate and clean up the site. The cairn was built using stones that were discovered on the site during the 1926 excavation and was rebuilt by the Kirkconnel Parish Heritage Society in 2002. (Source: site information board). A plaque on the cairn reads:-

Kirkconnel Parish Heritage Society restored this cairn in the year 2002. The Miners of the Village erected the original cairn during the 1926 General Strike. The excavation was organised by Parish Minister, the Reverend Forbes Charleson.

This project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
