negotiation between the two Gov-ernments, but to accomplish the same object by a negotiation betweenthe British Government and each of the Central American Republicswhose territorial interests are immediately involved. The settlementwas to be made in accordance with the general tenor of the interpreta-tion placed upon the Clayton and Bulwer treaty by the United States,with certain modifications. As negotiations are still pending upon thisbasis, it would not be proper for me now to communicate their presentcondition. THE TRIAL OF JOHN BROWN JOHN BROWNS RAID ON HARPERS FERRY The full account of this occurrence is given in the article entitledBrowns Insurrection, in the Encyclopedic Index. The eyes, not only of the United States, but also of the entire civilizedworld, were upon the court-room where the trial of John Brown tookplace. The upper panel on the preceding page reproduces a careful draw-ing made by an eye-witness of the scene. All the world knows the fatewhich was meted out to Brown; and it is his appearance as he went tomeet that fate which is reproduced in the lower panel. President Buchanan discusses the event on page -5084. James Buchanan 3040 nary and minister plenipotentiary to Madrid had asked for his recall, andit was my purpose to send out a new minister to that Court with specialinstructions on all questions pending between the two Governments, andwith a determination to have them speedily and amicably adjusted ifthat were possible.
