DescriptionA corner of St Mary's - geograph.org.uk - 951808.jpg |
English: A corner of St Mary's A variety of building periods visible behind New Buildings. On the right, the 13th century base of the NW tower of St Mary's cathedral supports the mid 19th century old Blue Coat School. Beyond is the Priory Visitor Centre opened in 2001 and its associated garden. To the left is a late 1990s/ early 2000s replacement for the 1960s Kennedy Centre. In the centre, the pink sandstone of the northern end of the cathedral church of St Michael, consecrated 1962. The grey eminence is a 20 storey student residence built in 1965-6 for the then Lanchester College of Technology, now Coventry University.
The Priory ruins have grade I listed building status. This area was excavated in the late 1990s to reveal some of the undercroft of the cathedral and priory of St Mary, founded in the early 11th century by Leofric and Godiva. Once the archaeological investigation was complete the area was re-covered and remodelled to a series of small squares. Some of the undercroft can be seen inside from the visitor centre and outside from the adjacent Priory Place. |
