English: The reserve is forty kilometers longer than originally planned, due to requests from communities to the south of the initial boundary line. These communities requested to be included when they learned that that the Reserve would target the protection of species during periods of reproduction and saw the benefits of improvements in lake management implemented during the initial phases of the project.
USAID has worked in partnership with the government of Mozambique, the World Wildlife Fund, and the Coca-Cola Company to protect the species and natural habitats of the of the most biodiverse freshwater lake on earth. Protecting Lake Niassa creates important economic opportunities for local fishing and tourism industries. (Photo: Christian Smith/USAID). |
