Summary edit

This map image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{vector version available|new image name}}.

It is recommended to name the SVG file “A map published in 1820, Hampi, Vijayanagara ruins.svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter.

Vijayanagara, the City of Victory, was the most powerful Hindu kingdom in Southern India from 1336 until 1565. It was founded on the bank of the Tungabhadra River by two brothers, Harihara and Bukka, formerly chieftains with the Delhi Sultanate. Vijayanagara flourished as a prosperous centre of Hindu art, culture and architecture, until the Battle of Talikota in 1565 when it was defeated by the armies of a coalition of neighbouring Muslim kingdoms.
