Notes Cover design by Henry Noel Humphreys taken from the tomb of the Black Prince. Material used for upper and lower covers sometimes called carton pierre. The design is described by Humphreys in paragraph 8 of the "descriptive index" at the end: "8. The carved cover is taken from one of the compartments of the Prince's tomb at Canterbury, slightly altered for its present purpose by the addition of the label to receive the title, and the extra enrichment of the mouldings; in which however, the decorative feeling of the period has been carefully preserved. In the publisher's titles at the end of BL C.30.g.7. - The Book of Ruth, this work is stated to be: "In a carved and pierced binding, price 21s." Gilt edges. The turn-ins are blocked in gold. Black pierced papier mache, with a red paper background. The design is identical for both covers. Two decorated raised borders are separated by a border of bosses. The central rectangle is filled with symmetrical medieval decorative motifs - there are small pointed arches on each corner, together with bosses, and leaves. Semi-circles are on the centre head, the centre tail, and the sides. The coat of arms of the Black Prince is on the centre. The title words are within a ribbon, which is above and on each side of the coat . Text copyright Edmund M B King and available under a CC0 license.
