neighbouring farmers have a right 22 SURVEY OF THE GREAT ROAD FROM of pasturage on this forest; whose variousflocks, with their solitary shepherds, arefrequently presented to view, wanderingalong its margins; completing the ruralscene. Tottenham House is a regular, handsomestructure, said to have been built under thedirection of the late Earl of Burlington; onthe scite of one burnt by the parliamentforces, during the civil wars. Opposite to the north front, about twomiles distant, stands a magnificent column;on one side of the pedestal of which, is thefollowing inscription: This column was erected by ThomasBruce, Earl of Ailesbury, as a testimony ofgratitude to his ever-honoured uncle,CharlesEarl of Ailsbury and Elgin, who left to himthese estates, and procured for him the Ba-rony of Tottenham:—And of loyalty to hismost gracious Sovereign, George III. who,unsolicited, conferred on him the honour ofEarldom.—But above all to Piety, to God,first, highest, best; whose blessings conse-
