editDescriptionA view down the bog - geograph.org.uk - 597309.jpg |
English: A view down the bog The upright slab would have supported a wooden seat with a hole in it. Looking down into the moss covered hole, I could see water below, but whether a natural water source was used to carry away human waste (this method was used in some quarries)is doubtfull as there is insufficient gradient here for water to flow. It is more likely that each compartment had a laterine bucket and that this would be emptied when full at the end of an active waste tip so that it could be buried by fresh quarry waste. The feet are mine. |
