Description
English: A walk round Martin's Pond (11). From the boardwalk in the previous image you can get a close up view of the extensive bed of lesser reed-mace that colonises the water between the island and the shore. This is the first stage of the Natural Succession process, trapping silt and plant debris amongst the stems. This eventually leads to the build up of loose marshy soil which is colonised by scrubby willow. Eventually this land would be able to support woodland. However, because of the unique nature of this site, with examples of all stages of this land "reclamation", the Nottingham City Council have a sensitive management programme to retain this varied habitat.

See http://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/www/greenspaces/Docs/MartinsPondmap.pdf for a map of the site.
