Title |
A well-known tea table altercation. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
Description |
English: The Prince of Wales (left) and Mrs. Fitzherbert (right) sit side by side on a settee; between them is a small round tea-table. Mrs. Fitzherbert flings the contents of a tea-cup in the Prince's face; he covers his face with his hand to ward off the liquid. On the wall behind her is an oval bust portrait of the Duke of York in profile to the right. On each side of it are two large pictures, partly visible: (left) a servant in livery embracing a maidservant, causing her to spill the contents of a kettle over a cock; (right) Time with his shears clips the wings of Cupid. 2 April 1792

Notes |
(Description and comment from M.Dorothy George, 'Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum', VI, 1938) Illustration to a dialogue (p. 184) in which, though names are not mentioned, Mrs. Fitzherbert asks when she is to be formally introduced to the Duchess of York. The Prince says 'You have no pretensions to any such distinction! - Because I submitted to a few ceremonious matters in order - to amuse you, and to gloss over your conduct to the censorious world, you begin to be presumptuous . . .'. Actually, the Duchess of York's refusal to treat Mrs. Fitzherbert as a sister-in-law is said to have caused coolness between the brothers. Malmesbury, 'Diaries and Corr.' 1884, ii. 452. See BMSats 7910, 7926, 8113, and cf. BMSat 7564. |

editThis image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
