A message from General Thomas soon followed,saying that he was heavily pressed, the messengerinforming me that General Brannan was out of lineand that General Reynoldss right was exposed. Orderswere sent to Wood to close upon Reynolds, and wordwas sent to Thomas that he should be supported,even if it took away the whole corps of McGook andCrittenden. Brannan was between Reynolds and Wood.The order to close upon Reynolds was day, Longstrett now gave the order to wheelto the right instead of the left, and thus takein reverse the strong position of the enemy.Five of McCooks brigades were speedilydriven off the field. He estimates their loss atforty per cent. Certainly that flank marchwas a bloody one. He with-drew his division and began his march tothe left and in rear of Brannan. A gap wasleft into which Longstreet stepped with theeight brigades ( Bushrod Johnsons, McNairs,Greggs, Kershaws, Laws, Humphreyss,Bennings, and Robertsons), which he hadarranged in three lines to constitute his grandcolumn of attack.
