Summary edit
DescriptionAbrams.svg |
English: Meyer H. Abrams, though primarily concerned with poetry, attempts to set out a general frame of reference for all art criticism in The Mirror and the Lamp. Abrams identifies four elements in the "total situation of a work of art" and associates each with a distinct critical orientation. The elements are: 1. the artist, 2. the audience, 3. the work itself, 4. the universe. (All of these are straightforward except the last. By universe, Abrams means the "objective state of affairs" which the work represents, reflects, or signifies.) |
