English: Bronze pendant amulet of the early Byzantine era (6th/7th century), depicting the kneeling demon Abyzou whipped by Arlaph (an arcane name for the archangel Raphael). The inscriptions on this side of the amulet read: σφαγὶς Σολομ[ῶν]ος μετὰ τοῦ φοποῦ[ν]το ("[the] Seal of Solomon [is] with the bearer [of the amulet]") and ἐγώ εἰμι Νοσκαμ ("I am Noskam"). The reverse (not shown) has a longer charm written within an ouroboros. Amulet described by Jeffrey Spier, "Medieval Byzantine Magical Amulets and Their Tradition," Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes 56 (1993) 25-62. |
