Nederlands: Achromatische fasecontrastmicroscoop (type R). Opschrift: Dr. C.E. Bleeker N.V. / Zeist-Nederland. In 1953 kreeg de Groningse natuurkundige Prof. F. Zernike de Nobelprijs in de natuurkunde voor de ontwikkeling van de fasecontrastmicrosopie. Met deze techniek werd het mogelijk microscopische onderzoek te doen aan preparaten van levende cellen. Tot dan toe moest het te onderzoeken celmateriaal gedood worden, gekleurd om bepaalde structuren beter zichtbaar te maken en vervolgens gefixeerd voor de houdbaarheid.
Prof. Zernike werkte nauw samen met de Utrechtse natuurkundige dr. Caroline Bleeker. Zij had, nadat zij in 1928 cum laude was gepromoveerd bij professor Ornstein, een natuurkundig adviesbureau opgericht. Dit was uitgegroeid tot een fabriek voor natuurwetenschappelijk instrumentarium, NEDOPTIFA, met name gespecialiseerd in optica. De instrumenten waren van hoge kwaliteit. Onder haar leiding werden voor Zernike de lenzen geslepen en de microscopen gebouwd. Daarmee heeft ze een cruciale rol gespeeld in deze belangrijke ontwikkeling binnen de microscopie. |
