Description
English: Acorn ANE02 Prestel Adapter (front). This view of the Prestel Adapter shows the classic Acorn cheese wedge shape. The serial number 12-ANE02-1002026 is just about visible.

The Acorn Prestel Adapter is a 1200/75 baud dial-up modem designed to connect a BBC Micro to the Post Office's Prestel system (see Wikipedia for more details of PRESTEL) . Before the days of the Internet Prestel was one of the first public on-line services and I, like many others, got their first networking experience from Prestel. It also can be used to connect to any 1200/75 baud Viewdata system, but there are not many about these days!

The Prestel Adapter connects to a telephone line via its built in telephone cable. It connects to a BBC Micro's RS423 port via the RS232 cable. (See the picture of the back of the Prestel Adapter above). The BBC Micro must be fitted with OS1.0 or above and have the PRESTEL ROM installed.
