Description

On 25 April 1840, Willoughby Shortland, the Rev. Richard Taylor, and Lieutenant Smart of the mounted police anchored at the mouth of Awanui River (Rangaunu Harbour). With them was the Waitangi sheet, which they were taking to the Kaitaia Mission Station, around 16 miles upriver.

Taylor immediately pushed on to arrange the hui, while Shortland and the police stayed on board until 27 April. As Shortland and co. travelled along the Awanui River on the 27th, they were received by local Māori with volleys of musket fire and haka. Whanau and hapū were also arriving in large numbers in preparation for the hui of 28 April.

This is a marine chart of the mouth of the Awanui River, and on the left, part of the river itself. Interestingly, the chart names the local iwi and notes their sites of settlement. It was published by the British Admiralty in 1857. Surveyed by Comr. B Drury, T. Kerr, Master and P. Oke, 2nd. Mast. 1852.
