After the signing at Mana Island, the HMS Herald made a quick stop at Port Nicholson on 20 June 1840. Thomas Bunbury landed at Thorndon, and was surprised to find Willoughby Shortland there (Shortland had arrived on 2 June to thwart the New Zealand Company). Hearing that Hobson, like Bunbury, had proclaimed sovereignty over Aotearoa New Zealand, he decided to head north to the Bay of Islands. But first, Bunbury wanted to get the signature of paramount Ngāti Te Whatu-i-apiti rangatira Te Hapuku, who was based in Hawkes Bay. The Herald left Port Nicholson on 21 June, and on the night of 23 June, anchored in Hawkes Bay near the mouth of the Tukituki River. This 1857 British Admiralty harbour chart of Poverty Bay to Cape Palliser shows Hawkes Bay, as well as Tukituki River. Zoom or download to enlarge. Surveyed by Capt. J.L. Stokes, Comr. B. Drury and the officers of H.M.S. Acheron and Pandora 1849-55.
