Description
日本語: 嘉義市。臺南の北方六〇粁，本島沃野の中極を占めて，製糖業及び林業の要地となり，東に阿里山線，西に北港線及び村子線は，何れも嘉義驛を南北に通過する縱貫線と聯絡して交通の要衝となつてゐる。嘉義郡役所を始め營林所出張所、農事試驗支所、林業試驗支所、法院支部、農林學校、中學校、女學校、嘉義大圳事務所、臺銀及び商銀の支店がある。人口五萬三千，昭和五年二月市制を施行せられ益々發展の途上にある。往時此地は諸羅と稱してるたが林爽文の亂の時節義を守つて之に屈せず，亂平ぐに及んで高宗乾隆帝は諸羅の民の義氣を嘉すと宣はれ，爾後嘉義と改めた。圖は市の中心地中央噴水より放射狀に伸びた市街の俯瞰である。（見元了，臺北商業學校教諭，臺灣山岳會幹事）
