E' una delle cinque basiliche romaniche fondate da Ambrogio ed è una delle più antiche chiese di Milano. L’edificazione iniziò nel 379 e terminò nel 386, anno in cui fu consacrata da Ambrogio e dedicata ai Santi martiri perché costruita nel "Cimitero dei Martiri". Quattro secoli dopo, nel 789, l'arcivescovo Pietro fondò accanto alla basilica un monastero benedettino. Fra il IX e il XII secolo, grazie agli arcivescovi Angilberto II e Ansperto presero avvio le trasformazioni che configurarono la Basilica, mentre più tardi seguirono le decorazioni pittoriche del Bramante, del Bergognone e del Luini. Nel settembre del 1395, davanti alla basilica, Gian Galeazzo Visconti venne incoronato primo Duca di Milano. Nel 1857 ci fu un radicale restauro statico e artistico con il consolidamento delle strutture per evitare ulteriori crolli alle volte. Le aggiunte barocche vennero smantellate e ci furono degli scavi archeologici e una ricognizione sotto l'altare d'oro per ritrovare i corpi dei Santi. Altri lavori di consolidamento furono realizzati nel 1937-40. Il S.Vittore in Ciel d'Oro venne rinnovato e furono compiti lavori alle cappelle e il campanile del Canonici venne restaurato.
