Summary edit

Description
English: Afon Dulas This typifies so much of the Sennybridge training area. In the foreground is rough grazing, with sheep pasture to the left. There are 40,000 sheep on the training area, basically acting as lawnmowers and firebeaters. Tenant farmers have certain rights to tend to the sheep, within training restrictions.

All the land seen here is used for infantry training, known as the dry training area. Rarely is live ammunition used. There are plenty of areas of light gorse scrubland and tree belts, such as the one seen, which provide training cover and also shelter for overnight camps and close quarters exercises.

On the horizon is Cilieni, a mock village built to model a typical east European village and built in the days of the cold war. The buildings are all of a realistic size, but of course empty. A closer view is obtained from pictures in SN8938.

To the left is the start of the high moorland of Mynydd Epynt, where all the ranges point in to a common firing area. That is the most dangerous area. Apart from rifle ranges, there are various artillery targets. But that area is used less and less. As artillery ranges have become longer the Mynydd Epynt is being outgrown.

This whole area is not often open to the public but a motor rally was taking place there this weekend and no live firing was taking place.

The picture could be of somewhere in Germany. I wonder if I could submit it to the newly started German Geograph site?
