It doesn't mater if world is watching or the world is too close for comfort! There were cars, in fact too many cars around but this pair was not in a mood to get disturbed at all... anyway, from photography POV not a great background but from wildlife POV the best moment one can ever witness!! The mating behavior of lions is a painful process for the female. The penis is barbed and its withdrawal hurts the female who may twist around and attack the dismounting male (Can be seen in the picture). The pain is necessary for feline mating as it is the shock to her system (we may call agitation) that induces ovulation and permits fertilization. Whenever Lioness comes into a "Heat" or Mature Enough Age to Mate, it will Spray or spread it's Pheromones or Scents from the Anal Glands upon Trees & Bushes, a particular scent which will indicate upon smelling by another Lion, and they will understand that there is a Potential Partner which is "Ready to Mate" and "Willing to Produce off springs". On smelling there will be a Grimace formed upon The Lion's Face and it is called as "Flehmen" response! When a lioness is in heat, a male will join her, staying with her constantly. The pair usually mates for less than a minute, but it does so about every 15 to 30 minutes over a period of four to five days, copulating around 100 times, phew!!!. Naturally the dominant males of the group are replaced by more powerful contenders over the years, thus ensuring the introduction of new genetic material into the pride gene pool. The new leaders may kill and eat the cubs of other males. The impact of this seems to bring the females into heat again and soon produce cubs from the new dominant males. |
