19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけて、 欧米ではアール・ヌーヴォー様式が流行した。 植物など自然をモチーフに、 左右非対称の有機的曲線や装飾性が特徴。 明治37年 （1904） には、 ニューヨークで作成した図案を基に日本陶器合名会社と専属絵付工場が製品化する体制が確立された。
