Description
English: On 23 November 2020, the European Environment Agency published the “Air quality in Europe” 2020 report, a high level report in which an annual assessment of the status and impacts of air quality in Europe are presented. According to the EEA's assessment, the quality of the air that Europeans breathe has improved significantly over the last decade. Nevertheless, 379,000 air quality-related deaths occurred in the EU (28 Member States) in 2018. Regarding the emissions and the concentrations of pollutants such as NOx, they have been decreasing over the past ten years, but values remain high. This result is confirmed by the data acquired every day by the Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite. As shown in this image, the average value of Tropospheric Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) detected between 1 October and 20 November 2020, shows high concentrations of this dangerous pollutant in the Po valley (Northern Italy) and central Europe. Every day the Copernicus Sentinel missions deliver petabytes of open data that are useful for evaluating air quality around the world.
