Il a été construit à l'usine Airco, un précurseur de l'usine De Havilland. Après 1920, ce type était également appelé De Havilland DH.9. Le DH.9 a volé pour la première fois en 1917. Il était destiné à succéder à la DH.4. Pour cela, les mêmes ailes et la même queue ont été utilisées et la coque a été ajustée. Le pilote s'est rapproché du tireur, plus loin du moteur et du réservoir de carburant par rapport à la DH.4 Le design avait un moteur plus fort que celui de la DH.4. Les plans étaient prometteurs, cependant, le moteur Beardmore-Halford-Pullinger (BHP) ne fonctionnait pas du tout. Le moteur n'était pas fiable et pour satisfaire un peu plus la puissance devait être pressée. De telle sorte que l'appareil a effectué moins que l'appareil qui devait le suivre . Le besoin d'un nouvel avion était seulement très grand avec la Royal Air Force à l'époque. Donc, à la fin, plus de 4 000 de ces appareils ont été construits. Versions ultérieures avec un moteur différent et plus fiable. Néanmoins, cette RAF a subi d'énormes pertes avec ce dispositif, notamment au front dans l'ouest. La copie montrée ici peut être vue à l'Imperial War Museum à Duxford. Il a été exposé ici depuis 2007, après qu'il a été entièrement restauré en tant qu'objet de musée statique. Cet appareil particulier a été commandé le 10 juillet 1917 et a été construit chez Waring & Gillow Ltd à Hammersmith, Londres. L'avion était prêt le 14 juin 1918 et devait servir d'appareil d'entraînement au 110 Sqdn. Kenley. L'appareil n'a pas été livré, mais est entré directement en stock, en attendant la livraison à la Force aérienne de l'Inde dans le cadre du programme Imperial Gift. On sait peu de choses sur l'utilisation en Inde. L'appareil a été trouvé dans un état négligé à la fin des années 90 à Bikaner, dans l'ouest de l'Inde. Le Maharajah local a ensuite fait don de l'appareil à l'Angleterre et il est donc revenu en Angleterre. Après des années de stockage et enfin une restauration, l'appareil est disponible au public depuis le 19 avril 2007.
