A quick round of planespotting before I catch Space Shuttle Endeavour on its move from LAX to Exposition Park. Alaska 708 arrives from Vancouver. Alaska Airlines is the leading carrier on the Los Angeles - Vancouver route, which is also its only current mainline route out of Vancouver. As far as the 737-400 goes, this is a rather late example, built in 1998. Alaska Airlines is the largest operator of the 737-400 in the world; this variant, which had been intended to be a replacement for the 727 due to similar capacity, did not sell well due to its slower cruising speed and shorter range. The deficiency of the 737-400 was one reason why longtime Boeing customer United chose to acquire the Airbus A320 series instead, and Boeing eventually had to answer back with the 737-800.
