. This conditionis important in relation to grain-growing as it prevents the develop-ment of rust. The fall season is regarded by many as the most pleasantseason of the year. The September and October days are usuallybright, the air is crisp and cool, and conditions are favourable toenjoyable outdoor life either in industry or recreation. The roadsare always good in autumn and free from mud. Sometimes theautumns are rather too dry and are not always favourable to activecultivation and preparation of land for the succeeding season.The autumn is the season for the sportsman and athlete on accountof the opportunities for hunting and on account of the favourableweather conditions for play. All the operations of harvestingare completed in the open. Both the gathering of the grain andthe threshing are usually carried on together and only the grainis housed while the straw is blown into huge loose conical stackswhich afford good supplies of rough supplementary fodder forhorses and cattle. 19

20 AGRICULTURAL RESOURCES Evolution of Land Enterprises.—The diversified surface,the variation from both winter and summer extremes in climate,the mixed resources and opportunities for different occupations inAlberta dispel the idea that prairie existence is to any degree flator monotonous. The land resources are a revelation to the new-comer especially in relation to the great ntimber of different kindsof work that may be undertaken throughout the whole scale of farmland enterprises, such as open pastoral work, small proprietaryranching, broad grain farming, mixed farming, special dairy farming,special pure-bred stock-raising and irrigation farming. The agri-cultural development of the province started so recently and is stillgoing on so actively, even in its most pioneer aspects, that an accountof its present attainment may appropriately include brief referenceto its beginnings.
