Aleppo Al Khosrowiye madrasa

Summary edit

Description
English: The portico of the mosque, with the foot of the minaret to the right. My guidebook has this as a madrasa, a Quran school, rather than a mosque. Indeed surrounding a fine garden in front of the mosque is a series of buildings that functioned as a madrasa. In both the mosque and a classroom I met some of the pupils who seemed to live here. The complex is the first Ottoman monument in Aleppo, or rather, was, as it seems to have been almost completely destroyed. It dated from 1537 and was initiated by Khusruv Pasha, governor of Aleppo. Construction may have been under the supervision of Sinan, the great Ottoman architect. One should note the portico is wider than the mosque itself.
