Description

The All-Marine Corps Track and Field Meet took place on 20-21 August 1948 at Butler Stadium at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia.

The following is an excerpt regarding this event:

"Never in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps has athletics played such a major role as in the post war era. Because of the keen spirit of competition the Marines have exhibited in all sports, General Clifton B. Cates, the Commandant of the Marine Corps, devised a means whereby the smaller posts and stations scattered throughout the world could enter into the athletic limelight afforded the larger Marine bases. Hence, the first annual All-Marine Track and Field Meet with its individual championships that clears the path for future competitive events giving every athlete, regardless of post or station, the chance to represent his unit in this sport."
