DescriptionAll Saints Church - C17 monument - geograph.org.uk - 1342261.jpg |
English: All Saints Church, Kirby Cane, Norfolk, mural monument to Elizabeth Catelyne (d.1681), (half-) sister of Sir w:Nevill Catlin (1634-1702), Knight Bachelor, MP, (fratris vere germani, i.e. "german brother", half-siblings ?) "whose domestic affairs she administered for not a few years with the highest prudence" (translated from Latin inscription). Their great-grandfather Richard II Catlin (1520-1556), a MP for Norwich, (CATLYN, Richard (by 1520-56), of Norwich and Honingham, Norf. and Serjeants' Inn, London, Published in The History of Parliament: the House of Commons 1509-1558, ed. S.T. Bindoff, 1982[1]) in 1553 obtained a patent to bear arms: Per chevron azure and or, three lions passant guardant in pale counter-changed on a chief argent as many snakes nowed sable stinged gules (Francis Blomefield, 'Clavering Hundred: Kirkeby-Kam', in An Essay Towards A Topographical History of the County of Norfolk: Volume 8 (London, 1808), pp. 28-37 [2]), which were presumably once displayed on the above lozenge-shaped shield suitable for a female armiger, now erased (possibly one of the lions surviving).
General notes> 1342241 - 1342245 adjoins the Hall > 1342243. The church dates from Norman times and the south doorway still has the Norman zig-zag carving > 1342251. The porch was added in late medieval times and the north aisle > 1342264 in 1758. The stained glass windows > 1342272 - 1342275 were installed in the 19th century. To the east of the north aisle is a vestry - noticeable from outside - where the former St Mary's chapel used to be in medieval times. When the floor had to be lifted due to rewiring several years ago, a vault containing three stone coffins was found underneath it. The octagonal font > 1342280 dates from the 14th century, with shields and faces > 1342285 carved in the bowl and four lions sitting at the shaft. The pulpit is 16th century (Jacobean) and the eagle lectern is dated 1893. This church is kept locked but a key is available. |
