editDescriptionAllan Park footbridge, Slateford, Union Canal - geograph.org.uk - 961315.jpg |
English: Allan Park footbridge, Slateford, Union Canal Two cyclists and a sculler approach the Allan Park footbridge over the Union Canal near Slateford. The bridge, locally known as the "Tin Bridge", was erected in 1904 by the contractors building Redford Barracks in Colinton Road. It carried a private railway line from Slateford sidings to the barracks to bring in stone, bricks and other building materials. After crossing the canal it followed the line of today's Craiglockhart Road and entered the barracks site opposite Elliot Road. The track was left in place once the barracks were completed but the rails were eventually removed about 1924-5. The bridge, however, survived and today carries a footpath and a major water pipe. |
