English: Cinerary urn for a boy
The inhabitants of Etruria used to bury their dead, following the Greek example. In the Hellenistic period they prefer the Roman custom of cremation. This chest was made for the ashes of Arnth Carpnate, who is portrayed on the lid. He died very young, and wears the round amulet worn by boys until puberty. Terracotta. Chiusi, Etruria (Italy), Hellenistic period c. 150-100 BC. Inv. 1510.
Inv. 1510. |
